Self-Assessment
Self-Assessment is how individuals report their income to HMRC and calculate any tax owed. It’s required if you’re self-employed, a partner in a business, a landlord, a company director, or if you have untaxed income—such as from investments, overseas assets, or capital gains.
You must register for Self-Assessment if you fall into one of these categories, and you’re responsible for filing your return and paying any tax due each year. The key deadlines are 31st January to file your return online, and the same date to make your payment.
It might sound straightforward—but for many people, Self-Assessment can quickly become stressful, especially if your income isn’t simple or your records aren’t clear.
